Raingardens

Raingardens reduce stormwater pollution, and they look great too!

Federation Square gets its
first raingarden, thanks to the efforts
of students at the
Yarra River Youth Conference 2007

Raingardens are an effective garden design feature that can help protect your local waterway by filtering pollutants in stormwater using natural processes.

Stormwater from roofs and other hard surfaces is diverted through the garden where the native plants and layers of soil and sandy gravel help soak up and filter the stormwater as it passes through.

Raingardens also reduce the volume of stormwater that would otherwise end up in our rivers, creeks and bays.

Our Water Sensitive Urban Design website contains more detailed information.

Already, several schools and organisations have taken up the challenge to help tackle stormwater using raingardens, and some are featured in The Source online.
