Drain Stencilling
Litter is a major problem in urban rivers and creeks - it looks ugly and can harm platypus and fish if they accidentally eat it or get tangled in plastic.
Most of the litter in waterways gets washed there from our neighbourhoods and busy shopping areas through the underground network of stormwater drains. To raise awareness of this problem, Melbourne Water has donated drain stencil kits to several local councils to encourage people not to litter.
Each stencil has the name of the creek the drain flows into and features a platypus or a frog and a message reminding people not to litter.
Schools, Waterwatch participants and other community groups such as Friends, scouts and guides groups, can borrow a kit from the following participating councils:
