Self-Assessment Tools
We have a range of self-assessment tools to help you determine what Melbourne Water charges, controls and guidelines may be applicable to your development.
What charges may apply to my development?
Charges (or contributions) are applicable for most land development projects.
A hydraulic charge may be applied to fund the construction or improvement of drainage works to cope with an increase in stormwater from the new development.
A stormwater quality charge may be applied to fund works to remove pollutants before they are discharged into the receiving waterway.
The contribution rates paid are dependent on where your property is located and whether or not it is within a Development Services Scheme, and the size and type of development being undertaken.
- Use our online mapping tool to find out which Development Scheme or area your property is in.
- When you know what scheme your development is in, you can find out what contributions may be applicable using our contribution rates calculator.
What controls and guidelines may apply to my development?
'Greenfield' (or new) developments may be required to provide drainage and stormwater quality infrastructure as a part of the development.
If you wish to determine if your development requires the construction of works before submitting an application to your local council, you can seek pre-development advice from Melbourne Water.
If you do need to construct works, the Land Development Manual outlines the requirements of developers when providing drainage infrastructure in new development, and is intended to provide developers and their agents with information that will enable self-assessment of most Melbourne Water standard requirements.
A number of design guidelines are published in the Document Library of the Land Development Manual.
