Guidelines for Connections to Stormwater
Melbourne Water must approve any new or modified stormwater connection into a drain, watercourse or open channel controlled by Melbourne Water.
Connecting to Melbourne Water system or to the council system?
Melbourne Water prefers any new stormwater connection to be made to the council system.
You must obtain documented evidence from council nominating Melbourne Water’s drain / watercourse as the legal point of discharge before your application is processed.
What is a stormwater connection?
Stormwater outlet
A stormwater outlet connection refers to a connection of stormwater from a development to a Melbourne Water open waterway or open drain.
Stormwater inlet
A stormwater inlet connection refers to a connection of stormwater from a development to a Melbourne Water underground drain.
Outlet connections to watercourses
Generally, stormwater connections to watercourses are constructed as per the attached standard drawing. However, this may vary based on site variations.
Outlet connections are to be designed/constructed according to Melbourne Water specifications. Further details on the method of connection will be provided upon assessment of the proposal by Melbourne Water.
