Tarago Reservoir Gets $6m Safety Upgrade
Work is about to start on the next stage of upgrades to the Tarago Reservoir, near Neerim South.
The stage two works include upgrades to the top section of the dam to bring it in line with national safety standards.
Melbourne Water Manager, Water Supply Operations, John Woodland said access to the Tarago Reservoir Park would be restricted during the four-month project.
“In the interests of public safety, the park will be closed on weekdays and Saturdays throughout the construction works,” Mr Woodland said.
“We understand this is a popular recreation spot and so the park will remain open on Sundays and during the long weekends in March and April.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and thank all park users for their patience and understanding.”
Stage one of the upgrade was completed in May last year and included the construction of a new river outlet to increase the amount of water that can be released into Tarago River.
Water can be released as an environmental flow to better mimic natural streamflows or during heavy rainfall.
The Tarago Reservoir is located 95 kilometres east of Melbourne and stores water which flows from the Tarago River. It was constructed in 1968 and has a capacity of 37,500 million litres.
The reservoir upgrade started in April 2010 and is being delivered by the Water Resources Alliance, on behalf of Melbourne Water. The project is expected to be completed in June 2012.
Park closure:
From February 14th the Tarago Reservoir Park will be closed to the public on weekdays and Saturdays. The park will reopen to the public on Sundays and during the long weekends in March (10th to 12th) and April (6th to 9th).
