New Design for Yarra River Weir
The proposed design to replace the old Dights Falls Weir in Abbotsford will be put on display for community feedback.
The Dights Falls Weir was originally constructed in the 1890s to provide water to a nearby mill, but now it plays an important role in controlling water levels in the Yarra River.
General Manager of Waterways, Chris Chesterfield, said studies found the weir had reached the end of its life and must be replaced to safeguard its structural integrity.
“Dights Falls is a significant Melbourne landmark and the new weir’s design takes the heritage values of the location into account,” Mr Chesterfield said.
“The proposed weir design is a similar shape, form and height to the existing structure, but will be more structurally robust.
Mr Chesterfield said a fish-way, which allows fish to move upstream past the weir for spawning, also needs to be replaced.
“As the current weir is a barrier to fish migration, fish experts have helped us design a new fish-way that will be more effective in assisting their migration.
“About 70% of the native fish species found in Melbourne’s rivers and creeks have life cycles that require migration either upstream or downstream, and fish-ways are vital in supporting vulnerable species like the Australian Grayling.
“Planning to find the best option for replacing the weir started in 2007 and we’ve worked closely with Heritage Victoria, the City of Yarra, Wurundjeri tribe, river users and environment groups in designing the new weir and fish-way,” he said.
A workshop with stakeholders was held in March this year. Questions relating to the environmental, recreational, cultural and heritage values of the site were discussed during the workshop and considered during the design process.
Mr Chesterfield said the consultation will continue with the proposed design to be put on public display between 27 August and 10 September. People will be able to view the design on our website.
An information tent will also be set up near the site of the weir in Abbotsford on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 August so the community has the chance to view the design and provide input.
The design of the weir is expected to be finalised within a few months and construction is due to start over summer. The project is being undertaken by the Waterways Alliance – a partnership between Melbourne Water, Ecodynamics, Fulton Hogan and SMEC.
Environmental flows in the Yarra River have now been increased by 17 billion litres a year due to Melbourne’s improved water security.
