New Booklet Delves Deep Into Yarra River
NEW BOOKLET DELVES DEEP INTO YARRA RIVER
Did you know:
- More than a third of Victorians live in the Yarra catchment?
- Seawater from Port Phillip Bay travels 10km upstream into the Yarra?
- The Yarra's home to species numbering: 22 fish, 14 mammals and 190 birds?
Visitors to Yarra River can become full bottle on the wildlife, geography and history of the waterway following the release of a free booklet.
Know Your River – Yarra River traces the history of the 242-kilometre waterway and chronicles the many species of animals and plants that live there.
The 96-page publication also explains how stormwater pollution enters and affects the creek environment, how people can help protect the waterway, and Melbourne Water's flood protection role in the Yarra catchment.
General Manager of Waterways, Chris Chesterfield, said the Yarra was a valuable natural asset, which was reflected by the level of interest and support by volunteers who dedicated much time to helping look after the river.
"Our role is to improve the health, amenity and water quality of waterways, but we are also about engaging the community and being a source of information about local rivers and creeks," said Mr Chesterfield.
"Whether you visit Yarra River to relax on the banks, walk the dog or have a spot of fishing, the booklet is a great resource to broaden people's knowledge of this local icon."
Yarra Riverkeeper Ian Penrose said the Yarra Riverkeeper Association monitored the health of the river, organised community forums and tours, educated the public and supported other community groups and authorities that help the river.
"The Yarra underpinned the lives of the indigenous people and the first European settlers, and today's Melburnians are no less dependent on the river.
"It is the main source of our fresh water, the centrepiece of many of the city's cultural events and recreational pursuits, and home to beautiful indigenous plants, mammals, birds and fish.
"Learning about the Yarra, such as with this booklet, is key to us looking after it better."
