New Booklet Delves Deep Into Werribee River
NEW BOOKLET DELVES DEEP INTO WERRIBEE RIVER
Did you know the Werribee River:
- Has been known by at least four names?
- Is home to species numbering: 30 fish, 190 birds, six frogs, six reptiles?
- Has more than 130 plant species along its banks?
Visitors to Werribee River can become full bottle on the wildlife, geography and history of the waterway following the release of a free booklet.
Know Your River – Werribee River traces the history of the 110-kilometre waterway and chronicles the hundreds of species of animals and plants that live there.
The 80-page publication also explains how stormwater pollution enters and affects the river, how people can help protect the waterway, and Melbourne Water’s flood protection role in the Werribee catchment.
General Manager of Waterways, Chris Chesterfield, said the Werribee was a valuable natural asset, which was reflected by the level of interest and support by volunteers who dedicated much time to helping look after the river.
"Our role is to improve the health, amenity and water quality of waterways, but we are also about engaging the community and being a source of information about local rivers and creeks," said Mr Chesterfield.
"Whether you visit the Werribee River to relax on the banks, walk the dog or have a spot of fishing, the booklet is a great resource to broaden people's knowledge of this local icon."
Werribee River Association spokesman John Forrester said the Werribee offered unique access to Victoria's volcanic plain outcrops, bedrock and gorges, native grasslands and stands of river red gums.
"It's important to recognise this fantastic natural asset. Many indigenous plants and animals depend on a healthy river for their survival. We can all help to achieve this," said Mr Forrester.
"Together with other local groups, we have taken a leading role in revegetation programs, rubbish removal, research into wildlife and the overall promotion of the river and its environment."
