DROUGHT CONTINGENCY

Melbourne Water Managing Director Rob Skinner today said the Melbourne Water report referred to in The Age today was an internal working document prepared in November 2006.

The report canvassed a range of water supply options for Melbourne and gave no consideration to the issue of water restrictions.

"It was not forwarded to the Minister for Water or the Government and the Minister was not briefed on the report prior to the election."

"The report was developed as part of internal deliberations and the options for additional supply formed the basis of a briefing to the Minister for Water in December 2006."

This briefing was then considered by Cabinet in January 2007 which resulted in the announcements made by the Government on 25 January 2007.

Announcements included measures to boost Melbourne's water supply by 40 billion litres over the next two years.

Details of the contingency measures are available on the Melbourne Water website: www.melbournewater.com.au
