STORAGES DIP AFTER A DRY WEEK AROUND MELBOURNE

23 February 2006

Melbourne's water storages have dropped 0.6% (11,058 million litres) this week to 5% below storage levels at the same time last year.

Storages are today 54.2% (960,410 million litres) full compared with 59.2% (1,049,985 million litres) for the same time last year.

It was a dry week in and around Melbourne with the four major catchments - the Thomson, O'Shannassy, Maroondah and Upper Yarra - recording zero rainfall for the week.

This dry weather led to a slight increase in water consumption for the week, with Melburnians using 1,516 million litres of water per day compared with a summer daily average of 1,462 million litres.

During the summer months we need to be especially mindful to use water wisely, particularly in the garden, to help preserve our most precious resource.

Take a shorter shower, use water efficient products and follow Melbourne's Permanent Water Saving Rules.
