NATIONAL WATER WEEK - WORLD WATER TOUR

11 October 2005

Nearly 200 primary school students will flock to Melbourne Water’s Western Treatment Plant to experience a World Water Tour to be held during National Water Week from 16 – 22 October 2005.

City West Water and Melbourne Water have invited primary schools from Melbourne’s CBD and inner and Western suburbs to experience different water uses and practices from around the world.

The students will receive a passport to the world and will visit four countries during the day including India, Singapore, Africa and Australia and carry out activities and experiments at each stop.

City West Water Managing Director Anne Barker said the event is a fantastic opportunity for school children to learn about the importance of water and how it is used differently in countries around the world.

“National Water Week is a great way to get people thinking about water conservation, particularly our young people who are the next generation of water savers.”

Melbourne Water Managing Director Rob Skinner said that this would be a great opportunity for children to gain a better understanding of a wide range of water issues ranging from drinking water, sewage treatment to rivers and creeks and water recycling, as well as to discuss and explore the water cycle, in a fun environment.

“Through activities such as the World Water Tour and our comprehensive Prep to PhD education program, Melbourne Water works closely with schools, tertiary and industry training organisations to help increase the community’s knowledge of vital water issues.

National Water Week was first held in 1993 and is an annual event held in October each year.
