DANCE YOUR WAY THROUGH NATIONAL TREE DAY
12 July 2005
Hume City Council and Melbourne Water are hosting a tree planting and music event for the local community on National Tree Day, at Wright Street Reserve, Westmeadows, on Sunday 31 July.
The event is part of the Hume Winter Music Festival (15 July – 7 August) and will be held in conjunction with the Friends of Upper Moonee Ponds Creek and the Moonee Ponds Creek Coordination Committee.
As part of this year’s event, more than 6,500 indigenous trees and shrubs will be planted by the community.
“Council is proud to play its part in National Tree Day - this is a great way to celebrate and improve our local environment,” said Hume Mayor, Cr Kevin Sheahan.
Wright Street Reserve is a site of environmental significance, supporting state and regionally significant vegetation species. It is also home to precious fauna, with more than 70 bird species recorded at the reserve.
“This site is a fantastic place for the community to join in a day of tree planting and entertainment,” said Melbourne Water Managing Director, Rob Skinner.
“This event follows previous tree planting efforts along the Moonee Ponds Creek, including the planting of 7,000 trees and shrubs at this site last year.”
As with previous years, participants will be encouraged to walk, ride, take public transport or car pool to get to the event, keeping in spirit with the day, by reducing energy use and greenhouse emissions.
The Wright Street Reserve (Melway ref. 5 G5) was the site of the inaugural Urban Tranceplant Event in 2002, and since then, some 700 community volunteers have planted about 22,000 trees and shrubs at the annual tree planting and music festival.
The Festival kicks off at 10am and will conclude at 4pm, with lunch provided. Melbourne Water have engaged roving musicians and ”Gone to Water” – Melbourne Water’s house band - to keep the hard working volunteers entertained throughout the day.
