COMMUNITY PLANTING DAY TO MARK WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
19 May 2005
Melbourne Water and Knox City Council will hold a community tree planting day at Old Joes Creek in Army Road, Boronia, to mark World Environment Day on Saturday 4 June.
Melbourne Water Managing Director Rob Skinner said the community planting day had become an annual event and was part of a continuing program to improve the health of Old Joes Creek and the surrounding area.
“In 2000, Melbourne Water prepared the Old Joes Creek Future Directions Plan, in consultation with Knox City Council, the Knox Environment Society and local residents. This plan helped develop a way forward for protecting and improving the creek and the area,” Mr Skinner said.
“Over the past few years, Melbourne Water and volunteers have planted more than 14,000 trees and shrubs along the creek.”
Cr Ben Smith, Chair Knox Environment Advisory Committee said: “Old Joes Creek supports the largest population of the locally rare and threatened Sword-grass Brown Butterfly.
“The reserve also acts as a retarding basin, which protects land downstream in the Bayswater Industrial Estate from flooding.
“As well as protecting significant remnant indigenous vegetation, the importance of Old Joes Creek is not confined to the local area. It is an integral part of the habitat corridor from the Dandenong Ranges National Park to the Dandenong Creek Corridor.
“I encourage the community to come along on 4 June and play a part in preserving this wonderful area for future generations,” he said.
Car parking at the site is limited. Volunteers should wear suitable clothing and gloves.
