Thirty-nine students from secondary schools in Melbourne's south east and western region have won Melbourne Water environmental champion awards, with some awards recognising excellence in science and technology.
Grants totalling $5100, certificates and 'Yan Yean: A history of Melbourne's early water supply' books have been presented to students from:
South East region:
St Leonards College in Bangholme, Patterson River Secondary College, Mordialloc College and Karingal Park Secondary College in Frankston. Frankston's John Paul College's environmental champion will be recognised at their awards presentation early next year.
Western region:
Werribee Secondary College, Galvin Park Secondary College, Heathdale Christian College and MacKillop Catholic Regional College in Werribee, Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, The Grange College in Hoppers Crossing and Bayside Secondary College in Altona.
Melbourne Water Acting Managing Director Grant Wilson said each year, Melbourne Water awarded grants to students at secondary schools located near the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee and the Eastern Treatment Plant in Bangholme as part of an ongoing commitment to supporting the local communities.
"It is important that we support environmental education, science and technology as valuable areas of study both at secondary school and beyond," Mr Wilson said.
"One of our key aims is to ensure that the community is well educated and informed about water issues. Through our $1.4 million Prep to PhD education program, we work closely with schools, tertiary and industry training organisations to help us achieve this."
