CALL FOR MELBURNIANS TO CONTINUE WATER SAVING EFFORTS DURING SUMMER
2 December 2004
Melburnians should continue their water saving efforts as we enter into summer, Melbourne Water Acting Managing Director Grant Wilson said today.
Warmer weather and less rainfall has resulted in Melbourne's water storages rising by just 0.1% over the past week. They are now at 60.7%.
"Although our water storages are still rising, we expect the levels to start dropping soon, and water use will increase because of the warmer weather," Mr Wilson said.
Melbourne's average daily water use was 1451 million litres in the past week. The average water use during summer is 1675 million litres per day.
Melbourne's four major catchments received between 16% and 153% above average rainfall during November. Maroondah Reservoir recorded 240mm, its highest November rainfall on record.
And during November, rainfall in the greater Melbourne area varied between 80.8mm in Werribee and 199.6mm in Monbulk. Visit Melbourne Water's rainfall and river level website melbournewater.com.au/rainfall
Melbourne's water storages for the week ending 2 December 2004 were 60.7% (1,076,263 million litres) full. This is an increase of 1503 ML since last week (25 November 2004). For the same time last year (2 December 2003) Melbourne's water storages were 57.5% (1,019,767 million litres) full. Stage 2 water restrictions are still in place in Melbourne. Permanent water saving measures will be introduced when Stage 2 restrictions are lifted.
