MORE RAIN STILL NEEDED FOR MELBOURNE'S LARGEST RESERVOIR

9 September 2004

While there was some good rainfall across Melbourne and in our catchments this week, Melbourne's largest reservoir, the Thomson Reservoir, received only 18mm. It is currently at 43.1% of capacity.

Melbourne Water Acting Managing Director Grant Wilson said more rain was needed, particularly in the Thomson catchment.

"The Thomson Reservoir, which has a capacity of 1,068,000 million litres, is still under half full. As our largest water storage, the Thomson has the greatest impact on Melbourne's overall storage level," Mr Wilson said.

"While some of our smaller reservoirs are full or their levels are quite high, our overall storage is 54.9%.

"But it's easy to see the impact of eight years of drought on our largest reservoir and why continuing to save water is still such an important issue."

Melbourne's water storages for the week ending 9 September 2004 were 54.9% (972,836 million litres) full. This is an increase of 5,682 ML since last week (2 September 2004). The increase represents 0.32% of total system storage capacity.

For the same time last year (9 September 2003), Melbourne's water storages were 48.2% (853,796 million litres) full.

Stage 2 water restrictions are still in place in Melbourne.
