$2 MILLION BUNDOORA PIPELINE REPLACEMENT PROJECT BEGINS
23 August 2003
Melbourne Water has begun a $2 million project to replace a water main running between the Metropolitan Ring Road and Grimshaw Street in Bundoora.
The works are part of a major infrastructure project to replace the entire pipeline, which runs for 13 kilometres from South Morang Reservoir to Rosanna. The pipeline transports an average of 25 million litres of drinking water a day to Melbourne's northern suburbs.
General Manager Infrastructure Grant Wilson said the water main was being replaced to protect and improve supplies in the area.
"The pipeline was first laid in 1892, and as part of our infrastructure renewal program, it was identified to be replaced," Mr Wilson said.
"We manage about 1300 kilometres of water mains and aqueducts across Melbourne, and where necessary, older parts of the water supply system, including wrought iron and cast iron pipe sections, are being steadily replaced."
This stage of works will involve replacing the pipeline between Grimshaw Street and Parade College, crossing Cameron Parade, Anderson Parade and Carolyn Crescent.
The works, which began earlier this month, are expected to be completed by December. Some traffic and parking restrictions during the works will be necessary. Melbourne Water will try to keep disruption to a minimum.
In 2004/05, Melbourne Water will invest $214 million on improving and maintaining Melbourne's water, sewerage and drainage infrastructure.
