BIG BOOST FOR MELBOURNE'S WATER STORAGES
19 August 2004
Melbourne's water storages increased by 1.1%, or 20,290 million litres, in the past week - the biggest weekly increase since November last year.
Melbourne Water Managing Director Brian Bayley said between 28mm and 67mm of rain was recorded at the four major catchments over the past week, which led to good run-off into the reservoirs.
"Most of this rain was recorded over the weekend, but the run-off has continued for the rest of the week, as the catchments are now wet," Mr Bayley said.
"Traditionally September and October are our wettest months so to have received such a large boost in August is a bonus."
Melbourne's water storages for the week ending 19 August 2004 were 53.5% (948,664 million litres) full. This is an increase of 20,290 ML since last week (12 August 2004). The increase represents 1.14% of total system storage capacity.
For the same time last year (19 August 2003) Melbourne's water storages were 44.7% (792,099 million litres) full.
Stage 2 water restrictions are still in place in Melbourne.
