The existing pipe bridge over Merri Creek
Why are we replacing the water main?

The M41 Northcote-Punt Road water main is 81 years old and has reached the end of its life. The main services around 50,000 customers in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. This project is an essential part of Melbourne Water’s program to secure supply to homes and businesses, and to help conserve our precious water resources.

Where are the works taking place?

A new pipe will be laid under Holden Street from number 235 to Thomas Kidney Reserve at the end of the street. The pipe will continue over Merri Creek using the existing pipe bridge into the reserve on the north side, and continue alongside Merri Parade to the corner of St Georges Road. The works will be staged, so not all the pipe will be laid at once.

Some other works will be done to close off a section of water main that will no longer be used. This section runs from Holden Street under property number 235, down Bundara Street and under the Merri Creek to the corner of St Georges Road and Merri Parade.

Cycle and pedestrian bridge

As part of this project, we will construct a cycle and pedestrian bridge on top of the pipe bridge across the Merri Creek. The bridge project, which includes the construction of additional cycling paths, is being facilitated and funded by Darebin City Council, City of Yarra and the Victorian Government.

Will my water supply be disrupted?

There are no planned interruptions to your water supply. However, during the works there is a possibility that we may need to shortly disrupt the water or gas supply for a small number of residents on Holden Street (between number 235 to Thomas Kidney Reserve). Residents will be contacted before any works take place.

Will road access or parking be disrupted?

Access along Merri Parade and St Georges Road will remain open. Limited road access will be available in Holden Street (between Bennett Street and Thomas Kidney Reserve) for a period of up to six weeks. Access for residents with special needs will be provided for during the works.

City of Yarra will make the parking permit zone full-time in Holden Street (between St George’s Road and Thomas Kidney Resreve) during this time. This means that only cars with permits will be able to park in this section of the road. Parking inspections will be carried out more frequently.

Pedestrian access on footpaths will not be affected.

Work Hours

Construction work hours are 7am – 5.30pm week days and 7am – 1pm on Saturdays.

Will trees and other vegetation be impacted?

Unfortunately, some trees and vegetation will need to be removed for these works to take place. We are consulting with Merri Creek Management Committee, and Yarra and Darebin Councils to protect as much as vegetation as we can. Planning permit applications for the removal of vegetation are currently being considered by both Yarra and Darebin City Councils. Following the works, the area will be re-vegetated in consultation with the Merri Creek Management Committee, Councils and local community groups and residents.

Who is carrying out the works?

The project is being managed and constructed by the Water Supply Alliance, a partnership between Baulderstone, Sinclair Knight Merz, United Group Infrastructure and Melbourne Water.
