Sydenham Tank Refurbishment

The Water Resources Alliance, on behalf of Melbourne Water, has refurbished a 1970s water supply tank in Sydenham.
What has been achieved?
The Sydenham Tank has been restored by:
- refurbishing the floor,
- constructing a new roof, and
- re-applying a protective coating to the internal and external surfaces of the tank.
These works were necessary to ensure Sydenham Tank, built in 1978, will continue to service the community for many years to come.
As part of the works we have also established three raingardens. Raingardens filter and slow the rate of stormwater before it flows into stormwater drains and into rivers, creeks and bays. By capturing stormwater, rain gardens are self watering and are therefore easier to maintain and use less drinking water than regular gardens.
The works have:
- improved the operation of the local water supply network,
- will save water, and
- ensure continued supply of high-quality drinking water to residents in Taylor’s Lakes, Sydenham, Keilor Downs, Kealba and St. Albans.
Future maintenance and operational works at the tank site
As with all Melbourne Water assets, there is an on-going requirement for maintenance and operational works. From time to time you may notice Melbourne Water operational staff undertaking such works.
Landscape treatments
The community has provided comments on the proposed landscape concepts which include various native plants to screen and improve the appearance of the area surrounding the Sydenham Tank. Landscaping and revegetation will commence in 2012.
We have identified a number of trees on site that are at the end of their life and need to be removed to ensure the safety of the local residents abutting the site. The tree removal may be undertaken in stages. Residents will receive a community bulletin advising the tree removal schedule in their area.
We would like to thank the community for their ideas and comments on improving the site.
