Water Main Replacement Works – Coburg, Pascoe Vale and Strathmore
Why are we replacing the water main?
The water main that services the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne is more than 100 years old and has reached the end of its life.
It needs to be replaced with a new pipe to secure supply to homes and businesses, and to help conserve our precious water resources.
Works to replace the main will take place in Coburg, Pascoe Vale and Strathmore over the next two years.
When will the works start?
Stage One of works began in December 2008, with the replacement of the water main that crosses Merri Creek in Coburg.
Stage Two will begin in May 2009, and will replace 2.6 kilometres of water main from Pascoe Vale station along Fawkner Road, Prospect St, Cumberland Road, Olive Road, Hazel Road, Essex Street, Sussex Street, Leslie Ave, Irene Street and Bakers Road.
Stage Three will begin in July 2009, and will replace the water main from Pascoe Vale station along Gaffney Street, under Moonee Ponds Creek and through Peck Avenue.
What will the works involve?
The works will involve digging trenches to remove the existing pipe, laying of a new pipe and removing excess soil. In some areas a new alignment will be excavated.
In most cases, works will move progressively along the road a few days at a time. The trench will then be filled and the road returned to its original condition. We will need to install a valve near the corner of Essex and Sussex Street, which will take closer to two weeks.
There may be some dust, noise and vibration impacts. Melbourne water will monitor the construction closely to ensure these impacts are minimised.
Will my water supply be disrupted?
There are no planned interruptions to your water supply.
Will road access or parking be disrupted?
Local traffic flows and parking will be impacted, however, our on-ground traffic management staff will work with community to ensure the greatest degree of access is maintained.
It is expected that there will be some disruptions to traffic flows at major intersections along the alignment.
We will keep you informed of any changes to traffic conditions through signage and notices.
Moonee Ponds Creek
The works will cross Moonee Ponds Creek at the Gaffney Street pedestrian bridge. Diversions will be established for pedestrians and cycle traffic to minimise inconvenience while construction occurs in this location.
Work Hours
The main construction hours are 7am – 6pm weekdays and 7am – 3pm on Saturdays.
Some night-time works may be required be required at the start of the work to set up the changes to traffic conditions, and then at completion to restore the road.
Residents living close to any after-hours construction works will be contacted before the works begin.
