Why are we replacing the water main?

Melbourne Water is upgrading a 12.5 kilometre water main which runs from Essendon Airport via Maribyrnong and Footscray to Yarraville because the existing water main is approximately 100 years old and nearing the end of its service life. These works are essential to ensure that Melbourne Water can continue supplying water to customers in the area and to meet future demand requirements.

Staged programme of works

To minimise construction impacts on the community and assure the safety of all, we are staggering the water main renewal and are prioritising sections of the main that are in the worst condition. There will be a total of nine stages from Essendon Airport to Yarraville.

Stage 2 Ashley St between Cranwell and Hampden Streets - under construction

In 2011 Melbourne Water has responded to a number of water main bursts along Ashley St – particularly at the intersection of Ballarat Road. This means we will be undertaking important water main renewal along Ashley St between Cranwell and Hampden Streets. We started work in late March 2012 and expect to be completed in October 2012.

Traffic Management

The scale of this project will mean an impact to property access, traffic diversions and construction impacts such as noise and dust. Please see below for the current changes in traffic management in the area to allow us to deliver our project in the most efficient, safe and timely manner.

Access will be available to all businesses. Please obey the speed limit and follow detour signs.

Traffic management changes
To complete works safely there will be changes to traffic conditions in this area, including;

  • No southbound traffic on Ashley Street between Cranwell Street and Churchill Avenue
  • Bus stops on Ashley Street between Cranwell Street and Churchill Avenue will be closed
  • Bus route 220 to Gardenvale to detour via Churchill Avenue from Ballarat Road
  • No access to Mitchell Street from Ballarat Road
  • Mitchell Street open to two way traffic
  • Detours will be in place and signed appropriately
  • 40 km/h speed zone
