About the project

The Water Resources Alliance, on behalf of Melbourne Water, will soon begin works to build a new Air Treatment Facility (ATF) in Westgate Park. This follows on from the long standing works to repair the Eastern Drop Structure (EDS).

Project update- May 2012

Initially we advised local residents that we needed to locate the ATF in Westgate Park as no other land was available. However, the Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) has advised that a portion of nearby land is available for the facility.

We are now working with PoMC to acquire enough Port owned land adjacent to the current EDS to build the ATF.

The preservation of this land for the Park is a fantastic outcome for everyone, especially park users. Melbourne Water appreciates Port of Melbourne Corporation’s offer and willingness to help the local community.

What does an Air Treatment Facility (ATF) do?

The purpose of the new ATF is to extract the corrosive gases in the sewerage system and remove odorous compounds from the air.

Why is the ATF project important?

The gas that causes odour also causes corrosion of the concrete with the sewerage system. The worse the odour, the worse the corrosion. The Hobson Bay Main and EDS have already been seriously impacted by corrosion which is why the rehabilitation works to repair the EDS are underway.

If urgent action isn’t taken to repair the structure and build the ATF, then corrosion will continue, compromising the structural integrity of the sewer pipe underneath the Yarra. If the pipe were to fail there would be serious environmental consequences, and so urgent action must be taken.
