Dights Falls Weir

Melbourne Water manages the heritage- listed Dights Falls Weir in the Yarra River in Abbotsford, which is a popular inner Melbourne landmark.

Studies have found the weir is in poor condition and is a barrier to fish moving naturally up and down the river. After investigating different options Melbourne Water has determined that the weir needs to be replaced.

In order to research the best way to replace the weir and fishway, the Waterways Alliance on behalf of Melbourne Water will be conducting geotechnical investigations at the site.

Dights Falls history

The first weir at the site was built in the 1840s to provide water to Melbourne’s first water powered flour mill. The current weir structure was built in the 1940s and partly replaced in the 1960s.

Dights Falls also has a significant indigenous history. It was a camping and meeting place for the Wurundjeri tribe prior to European settlement.

Investigations

These investigations will help the detailed design of both the new weir and a new fishway.

Investigations will be conducted up and downstream and will consist of a range of boreholes and test pits. Works will be both on land and in the river itself.

These works are necessary for the future health of the river and to assist in the protection of the site. The City of Yarra, Heritage Victoria and the Wurundjeri have been consulted about these investigations.

What’s next?

Once investigations are complete, Melbourne Water will embark on the design phase of the project.

Melbourne Water and the Alliance will liaise with our stakeholders as we progress the design of the new fishway and weir.

A series of workshops will be held to present the opportunity to discuss values for the area, and provide input into the design concepts.
