Building Melbourne's Biggest Wetland in Scoresby
The Waterways Alliance - a partnership between Ecodynamics, Fulton Hogan SMEC and Melbourne Water - is constructing Melbourne's largest man-made wetland on 48 hectares of land within the Dandenong Valley Parklands in Scoresby.
Bounded by Dandenong Creek, Ferntree Gully Road, the Eastlink Freeway and Wellington Road, the wetland is designed to treat nitrogen and other pollutants.
Once completed, it will stop 28 tonnes of nitrogen from flowing into Port Phillip Bay each year, contributing significantly to Melbourne Water's overall program to reduce nitrogen loads in waterways draining into the Bay by 100 tonnes per year by 2010.
Melbourne Water has built 43 wetlands within the Port Phillip Bay catchment area as part of this program to date; each removing an average of 1.3 tonnes of nitrogen per year.
Construction of the Dandenong Creek Wetland started in late March and is scheduled to be completed by June 2010 at a value of $15 million.
The Waterways Alliance is working cooperatively with local friends groups, Knox City Council and neighbouring residents and businesses to ensure that the impact of our project is minimised.
