Melbourne Water in partnership with the Australian Government and Kingston City Council is constructing a new wetland in the Clayton South Retarding Basin and neighbouring Namatjira Park.

The wetland will naturally filter pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus in local stormwater that would otherwise flow into Port Phillip Bay. It will also store stormwater to be reused by Kingston City Council, offsetting up to 92 mega litres of potable water each year.

What’s happening?

Construction works are scheduled to start within Clayton South Retarding Basin and Namatjira Park in January next year. Building the new wetland will be completed in three main steps:

1. Earthworks – The existing levee banks around the retarding basin will be reshaped and the wetland ponds will be excavated. A large amount of soil will need to be moved off site by trucks. At peak times we expect one truck to enter and exit the site every two minutes.

2. Civil works – Civil works are required to build the pipes and structures that control water flow within the wetland. A bridge and a shared user path will be built around the wetland to connecting Springs Road, Simon Street and Russ Street.

3. Planting and landscaping – 80,000 native plants will be planted in the wetland and surrounding park area to complete the project.

It should take about seven months, depending on the weather, to complete the earthworks and civil works. Planting and landscaping will follow in winter 2011 and summer 2011/12.

How will the project impact local residents?

We are committed to minimising the impacts of our project on local residents and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.

The schedule of works has been planned to minimise the amount of soil exposed at any one time to reduce the potential for dust. Water carts will also be used to reduce dust throughout the project and we will stop work during high winds.

Machinery noise is expected during project work hours – 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 3pm on Saturdays.

Restricted access to Namatjira Park during construction

Clayton South Retarding Basin and sections of Namatjira Park will be fenced off during construction to ensure the safety of work crews and the community.

Site truck access

Trucks will enter and exit the project site via Merlyn Avenue and Springs Road. We ask that road users follow traffic management signs and instructions during the project to ensure the safety of workers and the community.
