Brushy Creek Wetland Project
The wetland is part of Melbourne Water’s plan to improve water quality and reduce nitrogen levels entering the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay.
This wetland system is expected to remove about 15 tonnes of nitrogen a year from Brushy Creek. Besides treating the high nitrogen levels from the upstream Yarra Valley Water Treatment Plant, the wetland system will improve water quality by removing other pollutants and sediments.
How is the project progressing?
Construction of the wetland began in January 2009 and is expected to be finished late in 2009. Following construction, revegetation planting is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2010.
Work Hours
Work hours will be Monday to Friday from 7 am to 6 pm. Work is also happening on some Saturdays as required between 8 am and 3 pm.
Wetland access
There will be no public access to the site. When completed, the only people accessing Brushy Creek wetland will be Melbourne Water maintenance staff. On completion of the project, a tour of the new wetland for neighbours and nearby residents will be arranged if there is interest.
What impact will the wetlands have on creek flows?
Creek flows will not be adversely affected by the wetlands. Flows will only be temporarily stored within the wetland before being discharged back to the creek. Water quality downstream will be greatly improved by the wetland.
