Brushy Creek Flood Protection Works - Stage Two
The Waterways Alliance, on behalf of Melbourne Water, is undertaking the final stage of works to improve flood protection for people living near Brushy Creek in Croydon and Mooroolbark.
Stage two of the project involves reconstructing a 340 metre section of the creek between Bellara Drive and Maroondah Highway – immediately downstream of Stage One – to create additional flood capacity and improve the health of the waterway.
What’s happening and when?
The reconstruction of the creek between Bellara Drive and Maroondah Highway is scheduled to start in early March 2010 and will take about 14 weeks to complete. As part of the works, the Waterways Alliance will:
- Replace a 210 metre section of the creek currently piped underground with a new open waterway to improve flood capacity
- Widen the existing open channel near Bellara Drive to improve flood capacity
- Build rock structures in the new open channel to control the flow of water and create three permanent pools within the stream
- Build a new concrete pit at Maroondah Highway allowing water to flow from the new open waterway through existing culverts under the highway
- Use material excavated while building the new open waterway to fill a private dam on a neighbouring property
- Plant over 16,500 native plants to revegetate the area
How will the areas be revegetated and when will planting happen?
Once the reconstruction of the creek is complete the area will be revegetated. Over 16,500 native plants will be planted within the bed of the new channel and along the banks.
Planting will occur when weather conditions are suitable in mid 2010.
How will the works impact residents?
Similar to the first stage of works completed in 2009, this stage will require the use of heavy machinery including excavators and trucks.
We aim to minimise our impacts on the local community, however due to the location and nature of the works residents may experience noise during the project’s work hours.
A water cart will be used to control dust and vibration will be monitored during the project.
Truck access
Trucks and machinery will enter and exit the project site at Bellara Drive and Maroondah Highway via Ramset Drive. Please note, the speed limit along Bellara Drive will be temporarily lowered to 40 kilometres per hour during the construction phase of the project.
What will the hours of work be?
Work will take place between 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Occasionally work may also take place on Saturday between 8am and 3pm.
What happened during Stage One?
Stage one of the project was completed by the Waterways Alliance, on behalf of Melbourne Water, in 2009. The works created a new flood protection channel alongside the creek upstream of Bellara Drive and increased the capacity of the existing stream.
