Mentone Beach Improvement Project
To improve the safety, appearance, and amenity of Mentone Beach, three beach drain outlets will be removed and a fourth drain outlet will be upgraded to handle their combined output. This proposal was chosen by a committee of community and stakeholder representatives during a consultation process in 2006.
The project is being undertaken on behalf of Melbourne Water by the Pipelines Alliance in collaboration with the City of Kingston.
Stage one works
Stage one works involved upgrading the existing Marina Road drainage outlet on the beach and constructing a new littler trap. The Mundy Street drain was also diverted through the foreshore car park to connect into the Marina Road drain allowing the Mundy Street Drain beach outlet to be removed.
Stage one was completed by the Pipelines Alliance, on behalf of Melbourne Water.
These works are now complete and all areas have been reinstated.
Stage two works
Stage two of the project involves the diversion of the Charman Road and Sea Parade drains into the Marina Road Drain. Once this is complete Melbourne Water will return to remove the remaining two outlet pipes.
This stage of the project is being undertaken by the City of Kingston and will commence in March 2011.

Drain Outlet Appearance
In September 2010 works began to replace the Marina Road drain outlet with a new outlet structure. In conjunction to these works, three nearby council drains will be diverted to the Marina Road drain allowing the removal of those three pipes from the beach.
The final appearance of the Marina Road Drain outlet that has been adopted by Melbourne Water and Kingston Council was decided through community feedback. Of the three options presented, a clear majority of respondents preferred the one with a sandstone appearance (see artist impression below). This design blends well with the beach environment and has a lower profile.
