We are in the final stages of building a stormwater tunnel in Frankston – the biggest single project we have undertaken to improve drainage. This project is being delivered by the Pipelines Alliance, on behalf of Melbourne Water.

The final stage of works started in January 2012 and will be completed in mid-2013.

Why is the project important?

Frankston is a low-lying area of Melbourne subject to serious flooding during severe wet weather. We are improving the drainage in the area to reduce the effects of flooding on homes and businesses.

What is happening now in the final stage?

We are installing drainage pipe work through Monash University Peninsula Campus, and along Bloom Street, Roberts Street, Heatherhill Road and Manly Avenue. This area is the ‘project alignment’.

Reducing impacts on the community

Works will be staggered to reduce construction impacts on the community. We will work on individual sections of the alignment, one at a time, ensuring we:

  • limits access impacts to homes and businesses
  • provide a safe environment for the community and our work crews at all times
  • limit project costs.

What’s happened so far

The $73 million project has been split into three separate stages with work starting in September 2009.

Stage One
  • work began in September 2009 and was completed in 2011
  • a 1.5km drainage pipeline was laid between Monash University’s Peninsula campus and Kananook Creek
  • watch a video of a tunnel being drilled during the first stage of the project. The video shows the moment when ‘Sandy’ the tunnel boring machine broke through at Kananook Creek.
  • the first stage of the project cost $41 million.
Stage Two
  • work began in September 2010 and will be completed in early 2012
  • works went from Chisholm TAFE on Fletcher Road to Kananook Creek.
  • infrastructure was built and upgraded along Beach Street and within Frankston’s Central Activity District.
  • a gross pollutant trap was installed in Olsen Street. This trap captures large litter items such as plastic bags, bottles, newspapers and cigarette butts before they are washed into our creeks and bay.
  • the second stage of the project cost $12.5 million.
