Melbourne Water

Melbourne's water storages are currently 30.6% full.

Our Customers

We manage Melbourne's water catchments and major distribution system. We supply approximately 500,000 megalitres of water annually to our customers - the retail water companies (City West Water, South East Water and Yarra Valley Water). We remove and treat about 330,000 megalitres of sewage and trade waste collected by them. We also supply lesser amounts of water to Western Water, Gippsland Water and Southern Rural Water. We have undertaken long-term water resource planning studies with neighbouring authorities such as Western Water, Gippsland Water and Barwon Water.

Recycled Water Customers
Eastern Treatment Plant

The Eastern Treatment Plant has been selling recycled water since 1995, when its 12 customers used 0.005 per cent of the plant's output. During the 2001/02 financial year, our 33 customers bought some 1,156 million litres of recycled water, or 0.86 per cent of plant output. They used their recycled water for agriculture, horticulture, vineyards or to irrigate golf courses and sporting fields. These customers use recycled water from the outfall pipeline running from the Eastern Treatment Plant at Bangholme to Boags Rocks, between St Andrews and Gunnamatta beaches.

Other potential customers include orchards and vineyards in the Moorooduc area, the horticultural irrigation area around Boneo, golf courses and council reserves.

Western Treatment Plant

On-site recycling at the Western Treatment Plant could potentially use up to 16,000 million litres a year (five per cent of total effluent) by 2002/03, which could increase to 35,000 million litres a year (10 per cent) by 2005. The first significant flows of recycled water became available in 2001/02 to support cattle and sheep farming at the plant, with 5,683 million litres used.

Waterways and Drainage Ratepayers

Melbourne Water collects drainage rates from customers living in:

  • metropolitan Melbourne including the bayside suburbs from the Point Cook RAAF Base in the west to Mt Eliza in the east
  • the whole of the Yarra and Dandenong Valleys
  • the previous Shire of Hastings area on the Western Port side of the Mornington Peninsula
  • all of the Western Port catchments from the Peninsula east to and including the Lang Lang River catchment

Melbourne Water is responsible for the main drains and waterways that serve subcatchments greater than 60 hectares in area.

Local Councils are responsible for local street and property drainage systems that serve subcatchments smaller than 60 hectares.
