Quiet Lakes Ballot on Water Quality 2010
Bay Water Pipeline
Throughout the community information sessions ahead of the ballot, we were asked whether the Bay Water Pipleline would help improve water quality.
The 30cm asbestos cement Bay Water Pipeline was decommissioned in 1982 by the original Patterson Lakes developer (PDF, 55kb).
The pipeline would not have solved the blue-green algae problem, nor would it be helpful to restore the pipeline today. It would not pump enough water to flush the lakes. It would also produce water of a higher salinity, putting trees and aquatic plants at risk and would have very high maintenance costs.
The results of a ballot run in June 2010 have determined that Melbourne Water will pursue small low-cost improvements to water quality, rather than major improvements to reduce blue-green algae in the lakes.
The ballot opened on 11 June 2010 and closed on 16 July 2010.
Quiet Lakes residents have been notified of the result of the ballot, in early August.
